So, you want to buy a Honda Fit 2015

Honda has completely redesigned the Honda Fit for 2015.   The previous model came from Japan and was sold throughout Asia as the Honda Jazz.  The new Honda Fit will be built in Mexico so eventually the United States should have more available units.  Right now, the 2015 Fit is very hard to come by.  The units that have come into the Honda of Chantilly Dealership have come and gone before anyone has had a chance to test drive them.   Statistics that I have seen on the Internet suggest that people are paying higher than MSRP to get the Fit.

There is little wonder why the new Fit is so in demand.  The Fit is the least expensive Honda car sold in the United States.   The oozes with practicality.  It has more storage space than any car in its class.  It provides very good economy with a 33 MPG City and a 41 MPG Highway.  The Honda fit comes with an amazing array of features that are not generally seen in a sub-compact.  The Honda Fit is easy to park, fun to drive and sportier looking than the previous version.

The new Fit comes with a CVT instead of the previous 5 speed automatic.   (For more information about CVTs, please see my blog post about CVTs.)

What really makes the Fit stand out above all other sub-compacts is how much space it provides inside.  The Honda Fit's closest rival in other areas, the Ford Fiesta, can not brag about the amount of space that the Fit provides. In fact, with the seats folded down, the Honda Fit provides more internal space than some small SUVs.

At the time of this writing, if you are really sold on the Fit and absolutely sold on the Fit, then you will probably need to put down a deposit and order one because it is not likely you will be able to drive one away from the dealer's lot.

There are some options to consider if the Fit is not available.   Many people are not aware that the Honda Civic offers nearly the same economy as the Fit.   The Honda Civic is capable of 30 MPG in the City and 39 MPG on the highway.   The Honda Civic will provide a quieter and more refined ride than the Honda Fit.  The Honda Civic is available in a hybrid version and there is also a natural gas version available.

Another very good option is the Honda Insight.  The Honda Insight is Honda's lowest cost hybrid car.   Chances are, with the short supply of Honda Fit cars available, the Honda Insight might be available for nearly the same price.  If you drive mostly in the city, the Honda Insight can provide 45 MPG efficiency which is 8 more miles per gallon than the Fit.  Some publications speculate whether the upcoming Fit Hybrid will replace the Insight.  Honda has not commented officially.   In the meantime, the Honda Insight offers one of the best city commuting cars available. I have provided more details about the Honda Insight in my blog post about Honda Hybrids.

Ever Consider Acura?

Pohanka, which owns Honda of Chantilly, also owns Pohanka Acura.  Pohenka Acura is the world's largest Acura dealer.  Acura is Honda's premium brand.   Acura vehicles are built to compete against luxury brands such as BMW, Mercedes, Land Rover, Lexus and Cadillac.

If I were to generalize about Acura vehicles, it would be that they are the best value brand for luxury class vehicles.   As an employee of Honda of Chantilly, I am also authorized to sell Acura vehicles.   Please contact me if you would like information on Acura.

The two best selling Acura models are the MDX and the TL. The MDX is a three row mid size crossover SUV.   The MDX compares very favorably against the Range Rover Sport which is significantly more expensive.  US News and World Reports has ranked the Acura MDX as follows:

The 2014 Acura MDX is ranked:

I have provided the following videos to provide detailed information on the Acura MDX.

The next best selling Acura is the Acura TL.  The Acura is designed to sell against such luxury cars such as the Lexus IS and BMW 4-Series.  The Acura TL lists for about $36,000 to $46,000.00.  The TL will soon be replaced by the upcoming TLX.  I will have information on that vehicle when it is released.   In the meantime, look for promotions on the outgoing TL as there are likely to be some very good promotions upcoming.  If you are in the market for a luxury car but want the reliability that Honda is famous for, then Acura would be a good choice. Please contact me and I will be happy to help you.

Do Hybrids Make Sense?

Many customers come in to ask me about hybrid cars.   Does the math work?  Does it make sense to buy a hybrid.  The answer is complicated and depends on many factors.   The first fact is "how long do you plan to drive the car"?   Hybrid Cars cost more to purchase than non-hybrid.  The difference in price depends on the complexity of the hybrid system employed.

If a person drive about 15,000 miles a year and about 40% of that driving is city driving, then, the hybrid car should pay for the difference in about five years.  The more a person drives and more of that driving is done in the city, the quicker the return.

Before deciding whether to buy a hybrid or non-hybrid car, one should compare the price and options of a similar non-hybrid model to get a good comparison.

Let's compare the new Honda Fit to the Honda Insight.   The Honda Insight is a very low-cost Hybrid.  The price of the Insight is very comparable to the Honda Fit.  The Honda Fit has about 30% more room for carrying stuff.  This might or might not be an important consideration.   The Honda Insight gets 41 MPG City and 44 MPG Highway.  The Honda Fit gets 33 City and 41 on the Highway.   Someone who does a great deal of city driving will benefit from the Honda Insight high city MPG ratings.  The Honda Insight is available for under $19,000.00.  For a complete technical description of the Insight Hybrid system, please watch the following video:

I have also provided a link to a 3rd party review of the new 2015 Honda Fit.

In the $25,000 to $28,000 range, Honda offers the Honda Civic Hybrid.   The Civic Hybrid gets good marks for is comfort and performance for a Hybrid car in this range.   The Honda Civic Hybrid gets 44 MPG City and 47 MPG highway.  These are very good numbers.   However, the non-Hybrid Civic also gets some impressive MPG ratings,  The non-Hybrid Civic gets 30 MPG City and 39 MPG Highway.   The Civic starts at about $18,010.00 and goes up to about $28,000.00.

The Honda Accord Hybrid is the standout for Hybrids in the Honda line.   The Honda Accord can get 50 MPG city and 45 MPG highway.   The Honda Accord is a mid size car.  This compares very well against the Toyota Camry Hybrid which gets 43 MPG City and 39 MPG Highway. A very good technical review of the Honda Accord Hybrid can be found in the video included below:

The Honda Accord Hybrid goes for about $30,000.00 to $35,000.00.  The Honda Accord Hybrid is one of the most outstanding vehicles that Honda produces.  The Honda Accord provides very good comfort, trunk storage, style and performance.  If one were to buy the Honda Accord Hybrid and drive it 15,000 miles a year for eight years, the savings in fuel could be thousands of dollars.

The Honda Accord Hybrid is one of the most premium cars Honda makes available.  The Honda Accord Hybrid is rarely available on the lot.  If you want one, you will probably need to put down a deposit and wait.    Please call me to check on availability.

Honda gives customers the choice of some of the best performing non-hybrid models on the market.   They offer Hybrid vehicles that cover a wide range of price options and features.

Honda's CVT, some customers have asked?

I am not an engineer but I am often asked to research information for my customers and I will make an effort to share what I learn with all my present and future customers.   One of the questions I get is about the reliability of Continuously Variable Transmissions.   The benefits are that a CVT  provides improved fuel economy, saves weight and provides better performance.
Some driving enthusiasts have always loved manual transmissions because they can select when to shift and adjust their driving habits to match their driving mood and style.  The same car, with a manual, can be used to be aggressive or economical.   Older automatic transmissions lost about 20% of their power through the process of shifting.  Historically, automatic transmissions have been one of the more expensive and necessary replacements for cars.

More recent automatic cars use computers to select the shift point and operate somewhat like computer controlled automatic transmissions.   These transmissions use computer controlled solenoids rather than springs to adjust shifting.  These new five and six speed automatics have greatly improved fuel economy over the four speed automatics found in cars just ten years ago.

The CVT has been around for many years.  It is said that Leonardo Divinci sketched the first CVT  around 1490.   The first cars to use a CVT were introduced in the 1950s.   Honda manufactures their own CVT.  CVTs create their own gear ratio.  When CVTs are used, the sound of the car is somewhat different.  The reason is that automatic and manuals reduce the RPM in order to shift gears.  The CVT doesn't reduce the RPM. This leads to continuous power rather than a series of drops in RPM prior to each gear change. Some people find the sound of the CVT unusual because they anticipate the car dropping its RPM.  A CVT will quickly reach top speed with no drop in RPM through the transition.

The other thing that concerns some people is that the CVT uses belts.   They worry is how long will these belts last.  There are many belts in a car. Older belts used in the 1960s and 1970s are far different than those used today.  Belts are used for car's timing and to drive the air conditioner and the alternator.   However, the belt used in the Honda is made from steel.

The video below will talk about the construction of Honda's CVT belt.

Please note that manual transmissions will eventually need a clutch replacement.   Automatic transmissions can cost $4,500 to rebuild.   According to what I have found on the Internet,  the cost of a replacement CVT transmission is $1800 to $2600 for a new transmission (not counting installation).

Consumer Reports surveys their readers to find out what reliability they have had with their cars.  Honda automobiles have always been among the most highly rated of all cars in terms of reliability.   Most of the articles I read believe that the CVT should be more reliable than a standard automatic transmission.

Is your vehicle getting long in the tooth?

I talk to many people who are worried that their primary vehicle is starting to take more and more effort to keep it on the road. Most of these people have vehicles that have given them long and faithful service but one month they need a new air conditioner and another month they need to replace the brakes. One person I spoke to needs $4,500 worth of transmission work on a car that probably have a residual value of about $4,000.00. Timing with an older vehicle can be critical. Selling your current aging vehicle before an air conditioner or transmission goes bad could give you money towards a down payment, while waiting might put you in a situation where you have no residual value left.

Many of these people would love to buy a new vehicle but simply can't afford to take on new long-term debt at the moment. Some of these people put off selling their vehicle hoping that they can nurse a few more months out of it and somehow be in a better position to buy a new car. Many of these people rely on their vehicles for work and can't tolerate any down time.

I try to work with customers to give them options. One option is to buy a newer used vehicle. Honda Certified Pre-Owned cars must be 6 years old or newer and the engine must have less than 80,000 miles. Each vehicle includes:

  • 150-point mechanical and appearance inspection
  • 7-year/100,000-mile Powertrain warranty from the vehicle's original in-service date
  • 12 months/12,000 miles (whichever comes first) non-powertrain warranty from the original warranty expiration date or, if the original warranty has expired, from the Honda Certified Used Cars purchase date.
  • $0 deductible
  • CARFAX® Vehicle History Report™
  • Warranty is transferable
  • Roadside Assistance
  • XM Satellite Radio 3 trial months of service

My sister called me to ask about a CRV. I told her about a very low mileage CRV in immaculate condition that would save her over $10,000.00 over a new CRV.

If you have a vehicle that is getting a little long in the tooth, it might be a good idea to bring it to our showroom to sell towards getting a newer, more reliable vehicle you can have confidence in for your summer vacation.

For people who absolutely want a new vehicle, another option is leasing. Leasing will require you to have a down payment. When you lease a car, you are financing the depreciation of the car over the period you plan to drive the car. It is possible that you can sell your aging vehicle and use the proceeds for a down payment. Because Honda cars have lower depreciation than other brands, it is possible to drive a brand new car for an amazingly small monthly payment. Of course, all leases will place limits on how far you can drive the car over the lease period the car must be returned in good condition. However, leasing is a very good option for many people and it is an option I can personally discuss with you,

One more consideration is that because cars are lasting longer and come with longer warranties, it is reasonable to pay off a new vehicle over a longer period of time. The key to making this practical is to select a vehicle you know you can be happy with for five to six years. Extended warranties are optionally available that you can consider at the time of purchase.

If you are concerned if your vehicle can safely transport your family to your next vacation destination or worried you might break down on the way to or from work, it is probably time to consider your options.

I am available to help,

Bunmi

Welcome to Honda of Chantilly

My name is Bunmi Barnes. Welcome to Honda of Chantilly. My goal is to make your car buying experience easy, fun and stress free. I am creating this newsletter as a way to share information with my existing and future clients. I hope that you enjoy my newsletter.

Buying car can be a stressful experience. There are few investments we make that are more expensive than buying a car. Most people will only buy a new car a few times in their lifetime. My goal is to help you find the car that meets your current and future needs for the least amount of money possible. This newsletter will helpfully help you be more confident making your next decision.

Did you know that the average age of automobiles in the United States is 11.4 years old. This is the oldest average ever. Of course, part of this is due to the fact that cars last longer than ever. Today's cars will give you more trouble free miles than what was possible a few years ago.

I talk to many people who tell me stories of cars made 20 and 30 years ago that started to break down in five or six years. Today's cars are designed using computers and built with robots using materials that are more durable than older cars.

Of course, in the 11.4 years since some people have bought new cars, cars have continued to get better and better. Cars built 11.4 years ago didn't have GPS navigation, streaming audio, multiple air bags and many other features that come standard in today's automobiles. Most older cars with automatic transmissions probably have three and four speed automatic transmissions compared to today's automatic six speed automatics as well as continuously variable transmissions now available. Today's customers can also choose to buy a Hybrid or an Electronic Vehicle.

Honda

I am so pleased to be selling Honda cars. I am from Nigeria. My first car was a 1995 Honda Civic. My Civic, which I named Bumzi was probably acquired through auction and shipped to Nigeria. Many of the cars brought into Nigeria would be considered at the end-of-their life in America.

I drove “Bumzi”for three years and then passed her off to my sister. My sister is still driving Bumzi. Bumzi is now nearly 20 years old and still running. I can assure you, the last ten years of so haven't been easy for Bumzi. The weather and roads in Nigeria are not as easy on cars as they are here in the US. None-the-less, Bumzi is still running.

Most people that chose Honda cars do so based on their reputation for durability and reliability and they have a resale value higher than their competitors. Honda cars typically offer better fuel economy, more features for the money and more headroom and legroom than the competition.
I am also pleased to be selling Honda cars that for the most part are built here in the United States.

The new 2015 Honda Fit is completely redesigned. It is now built in Mexico which will make the Fit more available. In the past, all Honda Fit cars came from Japan. In Asia it was sold at the Honda Jazz. The new Honda Fit The new Honda Fit is clearly a “best in class”car. The new model is mated with a CVT transmission and now gets 33 in the City and 41 on the highway. The Honda Fit beats all of its competitors for interior space, legroom and headroom.

As I mentioned above, my first car was a Honda Civic. When I got it, it was already 10 years old. My sister is using it and it is still running. I have a soft spot for the Civic and understand why the Civic has been one of the most popular compact cars sold in America since its introduction in 1973. The Civic has had a long-standing reputation for reliability and low running cost. The Civic is available in a 140-horsepower 4 cylinder or as a hybrid. The Hybrid offer a combined driving MPG of 44. The Civic Coupe is rated 39 Highway and 31 City or a combined 33.

While the Civic and Fit provide best in class efficiency and practicality, the Accord adds luxury and a bit of sport to the package. The Honda Accord has been consistently rated one of the best family sized cars on the market. In fact, Car and Driver has selected the Honda Accord as the best sedan 10 times since 1983 – more than any other car. Despite being “family sized”, the Honda Accord delivers 36 MPG on the Highway and 27 in the city. A Hybrid version of the Accord is available that offers 50 MPG in the city and 45 miles on the highway or a combined 47 MPG. For someone who drives a lot of miles in the city, the Hybrid might be the ideal choice. Gas-only cars get their best economy on the highway and worst in city driving. Hybrids flip that around because most can shut off their gas engines at stoplights.

US News and World Reports and many other magazines rate the Honda CRV the best Compact SUV on the market. The CRV is roomy when compared to the competition. It offers impressive 23 MPG city and highway. It comes standard with a rear view camera. It has the highest reliability and safety ratings in its class. Of course, like all Honda vehicles, the CRV has a history of higher resale value than the competition.

The Honda Odyssey is another Honda Vehicle that is constantly top-rated by several publications to include US News and World Reports and Edmonds.com. The Odyssey is rated 19 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway. Among the positive comments by professional reviewers are “superb handling for a van”, “Lots of available tech features”, “Good fuel economy” and “High quality cabin materials”. Kelly Blue Book says “Among the gold standard for such people movers is the 2014 Honda Odyssey. Like the Nissan Quest, the Odyssey's exterior styling strays from the more traditional rounded shapes of the Toyota Sienna and Chrysler Town & Country, but inside, the Honda shines with features and functionality (yes, there's even a built-in vacuum cleaner). Add a strong yet efficient engine and outstanding safety and reliability records, and the Odyssey can win over many a minivan critic”.

The Honda Pilot is one of the most practical and family-friendly vehicles in its segment. It can carry up to eight passengers. It has a smooth power train and a spacious interior. The Honda Pilot features a cylinder-deactivation system that helps the V6 cut fuel consumption while coasting or cruising. The Honda Pilot gets a 25 MPG highway rating which is one of the best ratings for a vehicle of this type.
